HuManities Monday September

Monday, September 16th at 5:30 PM

Location:

Whipple Hall

Presented by Nora Lewis.

About Black Heritage Trail NH:
From the docks of Portsmouth, where merchants engaged in the trans-Atlantic slave trade unloaded their cargo, to the northern border with Canada where many escaping captives found their first moment of freedom, the Granite State holds a multitude of stories that mark the milestones of its complex history.
For more than 300 years, the lives of African people and their descendants have been a part of New Hampshire’s history. Yet this African American history has long been hidden in the shadows even though Black lives have been intermixing with White lives in highly personal ways. The Black Heritage Trail NH promotes awareness and appreciation of African American history and life in order to build more inclusive communities today. We believe that if we could embrace our shared history, we could heal racial anxiety and misunderstanding -- in our communities, our state and in this country (from Black Heritage Trail NH).

This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited; please RSVP to info@cfanh.org.

Storytelling with Simon Brooks

British storyteller, Simon Brooks has made New Hampshire his home for over 25 years, and most of that has been in New London which he calls his home. His audiences often find themselves transfixed as he combines the intensity of solo performance with the intimacy of face-to-face conversations as he shares folk and fairy tales, myths and legends from all over the world. Although some people believe that these tales are for children, as some are, many of these stories are really for adults. Simon travels all over the United States sharing stories and leading workshops at schools, colleges, libraries and businesses, summer camps, at community gatherings and at pubs! Simon grew up steeped in stories told by his parents and grandparents, and visited places where some of these stories took place. Brooks' recordings have won awards and honours from Parent's Choice and Storytelling World, and he has performed multiple times at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN as well as at many other national and regional festivals and conferences.
